Nothing Known about Lebanon Right Now

Lots of bloviating about Lebanon is going on right now, and none of it matters.

There are no trends. There are few plans. The plans that are already in the works have not propelleled far enough for them to become apparent enough to talk about.

There is a power vacuum, and many parties are trying to fill the void.

At the moment, some figures have increased their power, but that could be destroyed quickly.

For months I wrote about divisions within the Future Movement noting that three general strains exist:

1) a pro-business, pro-tourism, non-sectarian, not very religious, Dubai-style Arabism, diplomatically anti-Syria, interested in decreasing state coercion of citizens while increasing state control over crime, foreign policy, the flow of goods in and out of the country, and more. This strain is represented by Prime Minister Saniora;

2) pro-business through strengthening already present Lebanese monopolies and increasing the presence of Gulf money, pro-Sunni (and somewhat anti-Shia and anti-Palestinian), entirely sectarian, supportive of being a Saudi vassal state, generic Sunni pan-Arabist, violently anti-Syria, slightly in favor of the Iraqi insurgency, willing to pay bribes to get things done, willing to compromise values for political expediency, dependent more on foreign sources of power than domestic. This strain is represented by Saad Hariri.

3) somewhat socialist, pro-governmental subsidies, entirely Sunni sectarian, actively pro-Palestinian, supportive of the Iraqi insurgency, supportive of attacks against Israel (even though it's primarily a Shia campaign, entirely pan-Arabists. These are, basically, Nasserists. This strain is represented somewhat by Walid Ido and Bahia Hariri.

Shaheed Rafiq Hariri brought these three elements together. These elements have been moving further and further apart since his assassination.

Right now, Fouad Saniora has the most power within the Future Movement, and he has the most power on the Lebanese political scene.

But this will not last without an aggressive campaign on his part.

Saniora's wing of the Tayyar Mustaqbal is the most powerful politically and the most attractive to non-Sunnis, but it is not the primary vote getter for the party. Saniora has little support in the street. He is not a sectarian leader. He commands hearts and minds, but not feet, which in a feudal, sectarian, militant society like Lebanon, matter more than anything else. Most Lebanese hated the civil war. Their hearts and minds were with Musa Sadr, Raymond Edde, Fairouz, Magida Roumi, Rafiq Hariri, Rene Muawad, but feet were with the warlords who kept the conflict going.

Saniora has support, but politically, he's a compromise candidate, which is why he is so good. He is not the favorite candidate of the Future Movement, Amal, Hezbollah, President Lahoud, Syria, or Amr Moussa. Christians have no vehement opposition to him, as they would to Saad Hariri. He has the support of Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, even if Jumblatt plays games behind his back at times, like he did in 2005 when Saniora was in New York and DC.

Because of this, his power could deflate at any time. He could lose support from the Future Movement. Hezbollah could overpower him. The Christians will not actively promote him, and Walid Jumblatt will triangulate.

Syria, as usual, is actively opposing Saniora knowing that he is the least likely person in Lebanon to make a deal with them. Saad Hariri, Walid Jumblatt, Christian leaders, and the Shia leadership have all shown their willingness to cave to Syrian demands. Saniora has stuck by virtues, and for this he maintains the support of the Sunni and Druze, which have no desire to move back into the Syrian camp.

But if Hezbollah and Syria manage to become stronger, there is nothing that Saniora or the pro-Saniora Western governments can do to stop them.

We must hope and pray that Prime Minister Saniora has a few tricks up his sleeve and can keep dissenters within his own movement under control.

very possible division within the hariri association...

but i think the description of each may not be very accurate.

for example: the second current of saad hariri... i don't think it is anti-palestinian at all.. perhaps anti-palestinian in the sense it is pro-isreali but wants the palestinians stuck inside lebanon to be his men. In the same context, i am not sure how you could call him pro-iraqi insurgency.

as for the third group.. keep walid Ido out. he is not man enough to have his own ideas.

First support the NATO soldiers
as they arrive in Lebanon ...
If Hezbolla begins attacking
these soldiers Lebanese must
come out in the streets
and protest against these attacks.

Lebanons government must gradually
gain control of all weapons of war
and explosives.

The Lebanese army can be gradually
built up with the help of NATO.
In parallel say in one month
Lebanese government should begin
negotiating a final peace agreement
with Israel ... it may be a long process but the sooner it gets started the better
If Hezbolla reacts with car-bombings to the begining of negotiations with Israel ...
then again ... the Lebanese people must come out in the streets as they did before and support the
Government

Your country simpley can not survive unless the people continually support the central government

Same thing in Iraq ...
Same thing by supporting Abbas in
Palestinian areas ...

Do Muslims about the world realize
that Israel left Gaza over a year ago !!

Do they realize that USA was to contribute over 200 million dollars
to the construction of a brand new modern seaport in Gaza !!!

Can anyone imagine how good life would have been in Gaza if the Palestinians simply left The Israelis alone and by now they
would have significant improvements
in their Gaza infastructure ...
Farmers would be shipping their produce from their own new seaport ...

thousands of good jobs would have been created ... and if things went well Abbas would be negotiating Israels withdrawal
from more of the West Bank ...

Look how well things were going
before Hezbolla attacked Israelis !!!

You can rebuild fairly quickly ...
but start the negotiations for
what it would take for a permanent
treaty with Israel fairly soon ...

Get out in the streets in a few months and demonstrate for a permanent treaty with Israel !!!

Hello, i came across some interesting facts from an article i just read,,,i wrote down the main points..

First,In 1970 , the U.S believe it or not was pushing Iran to develop its nuclear capabilities , so that they can supply them with ingredients and make huge profits...

" The ford administration stood to make billions as suppliers)..."

The deal dissolved because the Islamic revolution leader Khomeini deemed Nuclear weapons " un - islamic "

Today, they are a threat, and we are getting closer to war,, to the delight of Cheney , owner of war supplies company, haliburton..Both the vice pres Cheney ,and rumsfeld are leading the charge to war..(i wonder why??? )

In the 1980's war btw Iran and Iraq, the U.S supported Saddams regime with weapons etc... a decade later , they make up the WMD story and destroy his country...

did u know : The U.S is currently buiiding the biggest U.S embassy in the world in Iraq( the size of Vatican City ) reportedly , and permanent military bases,,just like in jordan, kuwait, saudi, dubai and qatar..

in 2003, iran offerd the U.S a full peace deal,, the U.S rejected.

The U.S is asking for 75 million $ to fund anti-regime broadcasting ,from the son of the former Shah, Reza Pahlavi... Sort of gives you a sense of why American media is so biased,,its controlled by money.

Israel, India and even an unstable military regime like Pakistan have nuclear weapons , yet Iran is criticized for pursuing nuclear energy.

Iran, unlike other nations has signed nuclear non- proliferation treaty, which would be subject to inspections by the IAEA.

Shirin Ebadi, nobel peace prize 2003, only muslim to have won the prize,,says : change can only come from within and not forced by an outside power,, which reminds me of Lebanon and the failure of the whole campaign in causing any positive effects.

As the world reaches peak oil, where half the world's oil has been depleted,, oil and the atom have become the yin and yang of global energy politics... Once you understand this, you'll understand the reasoning behind U.S foreign policy.

The IAEA has yet to find any evidence of Iran's nuclear weapon program and even if they secretly were trying to acquire the bomb, U.S intelligence suggests achievement is ten years away. And when the U.S is helping India in its nuclear program despite that country having nuclear weapons, and with Pakistan and Israel being left to do as they please , and while the pentagon is devising next generation nukes of its own.. its no surprise that U.S are being labelled in Iran as " the global arrogance ".

How could Iran nuke Israel ,without wiping out palestine ,Lebanon ,jordan and Syria, and even parts of Iran,, you see, this whole situation is unreal,i mean, exaggerated ,the U.S administ needs enemies to profit from weaponry, and public opinion come election day..

The Iranian threat to wipe out Israel is purely political, he knows it ,we all know it ,its to tell the world that he's not scared and wont be intimidated by threats, and therefore pushing for fair negotiations. The israeli army would require hours to destroy the govn in Iran,, and the Iranians know that, but in their bid to become a regional power, they must act like a powerful nation....

Which brings me to my question,, was the war in Lebanon a threat to Iran( look what we can do) ,or was it a message to the arabs and the palestinians...Maybe it was pressure on Syria and lebanon to sign peace with Israel,,i dont know, but i do know it wasnt about 2 soldiers, or the threat of rockets ,,

One thing is for sure, their plan backfired, now the Israeli govn is falling apart, world opinion has shifted and U.S policy has been exposed.

I hope for the sake of my beloved country ,which always ends up being the battleground, that we will get past this sticky situation , and that the people are wise enough to avoid internal violence and push for a new politicians , who can work for a new Lebanon , free from corruption and sectarianism.

Good post Chuck,

I'd like though to repeat for the zillionth time:

You cannot fight a "romantic/liberation/martyrdom" (crazy) agenda with a "tourism/building apts/gdp" agenda.

People have to be mobilized to counter the intensity of the wackos. The Siniora agenda (modern state, prosperity, infrastructure etc) needs to be SOLD aggressively.

It has to be linked to liberty/responsibility/future generations etc....

It may be a matter of packaging, though I think it is more. Dubai-style whatever is a total turn-off to me. The other wings of March 14 that you mention are bound to lead to failure.

Of course, what I am talking about would also have the advantage of uniting many parties and factions and strengthening the "majority". But it has to be a protracted well, thought-out, long term AGGRESSIVE project (like Hezbo's).

The Middle-East is totally F...ed-up, thanks to its policicans, people, hezbo, israel, the arab states, the west, all are to blame.

No one is immune from blame in this situation. it's pretty bad guys...really bad.

there's no win-win for anyone so they will all keep fighting for the next 100 years at this rate. look at the last 60 years! what a shame...generations gone by without any hope of happiness and well-being.

Lebanon is a jungle right now. it's the law of the animals- one prey eats another.

Saniora seems to have plenty of backing within Lebanon in the right places but doesn't he, in the name of national pride/solidarity, have to support Nasrallah? At least publicly, he must.

He's been the voice of Lebanon over the past month but will his tacit support of Hezbollah and Nasrallah hurt him? If Hezbollah is disarmed and/or politically marginalized, will it erode internal confidence in Saniora?

Also, your description of Saad Hariri is somewhat troubling. If he is so pro-Sunni and pro-Iraqi insurgency, what hope does he have to exert power in an increasingly Shia dominated Lebanon? With the cease-fire barely holding on, couldn't a sectarian civil war erupt in Lebanon again, pushing the Christians and the Sunni further into the margins? Doesn't he want to follow in his father's footsteps?

Alas, "If Said" criticizes all who post anonymously and he doesn't even leave his name in his post. It is clear he is not interested in peace, but only wants to hate and spread hate to all those around him. I feel sorry for this perspective that is passed around to children. There will be no peace for any side that is not interested in teaching peace or living side by side without attacking each other.

I agree that it is time for people to demonstrate, perhaps in all countries, that they support a government that is opposed to military aggression and opposed to spreading hate in order to live a peaceful coexistance. There will always be people who provoke others to prevent otherwise peaceful minded people from understanding the other side in order to continue their aggression. People don't have to agree on the issues in order to live side-by-side and on peaceful terms. All it takes is stopping the aggression on both sides. We know it works. Israel and Jordon did this. Israel and Egypt did this.

Been away for a while…

I’ve just came back from about 3 weeks of army service in the IDF including about 10 days of active war in the Israeli artillery forces.

There were nights it seems like a movie. I heard HA rockets whistling above my head hitting Israeli towns. I saw the forests of northern Israel burning, coloring the night sky with orange. I saw the MLRS firing back leaving a trail of smoke across the sky. I heard the machine guns, the tanks, the planes, the choppers, the cannons. I heard some kind of an explosion every 10 seconds. I saw HA rockets hitting 300 feet from me. We fired back. We destroyed one HA rocket launcher. We killed 3 HA fighters. We nailed one HA anti-tank unit. The war ended. I went home back to my family. I saw my wife and kids again. I survived this round.

p.s.
I met with many soldiers from different units in the front and talked to a lot of my friends that came back from the war. Everywhere I asked, Israeli combat soldiers describe the same thing – in many cases they were held back in order not to harm Lebanese civilians. Examples: A combat pilot friend of mine estimates 80-90 percent of his targets were empty fields. My artillery unit from time to time fired more than 100 shells to the same target (one spot on some empty field). A soldier I met on the front from another artillery unit said they saw HA fighters in a village bellow them but didn’t get a clearance to fire at them. 2 friends of mine (one from an anti-tanks unit, and one from an infantry unit) say the same thing. Everywhere you ask it’s the same story. It seems like the IDF was held back by the politicians in order to avoid Lebanese civilian casualties, many times increasing the risk to its own soldiers. I think that if the IDF was given a free hand, HA would have been reduced to Nasrallah and maybe another 10 people that are hiding in his bunker.

Glad to be home again.
Peace to all.
