The gun battle I wrote about earlier resulted in Hezbollah taking control of the area around Hariri's palace in Koreitem. They didn't storm the palace, but they control entry and exit.
There are Hezbollah members all over Hamra, and also Amal and SSNP militamen running around all over the place. The SSNP is putting flags up all over the streets of Hamra.
There are shell casings all over, and scars of battles on many buildings: broken windows, holes in walls.
Some people are walking in the streets.

The real scars of the battles are not the windows and the holes, and believe me, they will not heal soon.
Any reports from the hospitals of casualties?
As a mother of a son living in Beirut I really appreciate your real time coverage of what is happening. As I was speaking with him last night (about 10pm your time) I heard a bomb go off and then the sound of guns for the duration of the call. Hard to hang up.
The media coverage in the US is pathetic. Yes, the Burmese (I refuse to say M...) disaster takes the number one spot and it should. Lebanon followed last evening in the number 2 position on the Lehrer News Hour, however, there were no details--no story development.
There is no comparison to the coverage of the Israel/Lebanon War. In fact, it's as if there is just a little skirmish going on--and they make it sound minor compared to the current Barack/Clinton battle. It's heart breaking to see people and media in a country you love act so naive and self centered.
The re-emergence of the SSNP in Beirut is the most random aspect of this entire mess. Until yesterday, all they had was that one Rotary Club-esque metal sign on Hamra - and now poof! they're back.
Come up here if you need/want a break - we're "waiting for you"!
